Now Recruiting Volunteers for the 2026-27 School Year!

Do you enjoy working with children? Would you like to help boost the reading and learning skills of local students? If so, you may want to become a Word Buster! The Word Busters program is made up of volunteers who spend, on average, one hour per week working with students in local primary classrooms.

At the kindergarten level, volunteers help students learn letter names, sounds, and the first sight words. In the first and second grades, volunteers help students master a list of 300+ high frequency sight words and reinforce other reading skills being taught at these grade levels.

Volunteers need no prior knowledge or training. The Word Busters program provides volunteer training and support.

Refer-a-Friend Challenge

Invite a friend to join Word Busters and you could both win!

Current volunteers who refer a new volunteer for the 2026–2027 school year will receive an entry into a drawing for each referral. The new volunteer will also receive an entry.

How it works:

  • Invite a friend to sign up as a new Word Busters volunteer.

  • Your friend lists your name as their referral when completing their volunteer application.

  • Once they sign up, you both receive one entry into the drawing.

Prizes:

  • 10 winning pairs

  • Each winner receives a $50 Amazon gift card

Timeline:

  • Launch: May 12

  • Referral Period: May–October 31

  • Winners Announced: December at the Holiday Social

Start thinking now about who you'd like to invite! The more friends you refer, the more chances you have to win!

mission

The mission of Word Busters is to ensure primary students master high frequency words (sight words). Using well-trained community volunteers, we work one-on-one with students in their own classroom. We employ consistent practices, self-paced goals and positive reinforcement to achieve success.

It is our vision that Word Busters will facilitate greater success in reading mastery for children, thereby enabling measurable academic success.
